The Open MPI features require Mac OS X 10.5 or Server 10.5 or later. Pooch v1.7.6 is priced at US$175 for the first compute node then US$125 for each node thereafter. Pooch Pro v1.7.6 is priced at. The Open MPI Project is an open source Message Passing Interface implementation that is developed and maintained by a consortium of academic, research, and industry partners. It combines technologies and resources from several other projects (FT-MPI, LA-MPI, LAM/MPI, and PACX-MPI), and is used by many TOP500 supercomputers. [2]

Before starting this tutorial, please consider downloading versions of XDeveloper (Step 1) and GNU compilers (Step 2) according to your current Mac settings (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.x, Snow-Leopard 10.6.x or Leopard 10.5.x).

Step 1 : Installing XDeveloper package

  • Download XCode 4.2.1 on the Mac App Store, using iTunes.
  • Install it by double-clicking the downloaded .dmg.

Step 2 : Updating C/C++/Fortran GNU compilers

  • Download the Gcc 4.6 package, containing both Gcc and Gfortran libraries, from HPC for Mac OS X‘s website.

  • Using a Terminal console, unzip the downloaded archive :

gunzip gcc-lion-intel-bin.tar.gz

  • Install and update GNU libraries :

sudo tar -xvf gcc-lion-intel-bin.tar -C /

  • Update the shell resource .bashrc file, assuming you are using the bash shell :

echo 'export PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH' >> ~/.bashrc

  • In a new Teminal window, verify you have the latest versions of gcc and gfortran using -v flag :

gfortran -v

Step 3 : Installing Open MPI

  • Download the lastest super stable release of Open MPI 1.4.3 from the Open Source High Performance Computing website.
  • Extract the downloaded archive :

tar -zxvf openmpi-1.4.3.tar.gz

  • From the extracted directory, prepare the config.log file, which collects informations about you system, needed for the installation :

cd openmpi-1.4.3

./configure --prefix=/usr/local

  • Make the executables for installation :

make all

  • Using a Super-User privilegies, finalize the installation :

sudo make install

Openmpi

Open MPI is now installed on your system. Use :

  • mpicc (C++) or mpif90 (Fortran 90) for compiling sources :

mpif90 mpicode.f -o mpicode.exe

  • mpiexec or mpirun for executing MPI programs :

mpirun -np 8 mpicode.exe

This procedure was successfully tested on a Max OS X Lion system.
